On empathy being stronger than fear.

Mummy, I am a little afraid of thunderstorms.

They can be a little surprising, I know – but you may get used to them as you get bigger. [I continue to get ready to walk the dog in the pelting rain/lightning]

I think I will stay home while you walk the dog today.

Ok. Dad’s in the shower, but he’ll be down soon. Seeya, kid!

[I get back 10 minutes later, the thunder is crashing around directly overhead – the dog is a bit freaked.]

Hey, jellybean! How’d you do with the storm? It’s nuts out there!

Actually, I am fine. The cat was very scared and I love her, so I had to reassure her instead of being scared. We are both doing fine, now.
